POTENTIAL CONTENTION ON CHECKPOINT FAST MUTEX DURING NON-BLOCKING CHECKPOINT

| Problem description: |
During protracted non-blocking checkpoints the internal
checkpoint latch can become a bottleneck, eventually causing
application slowdown. The number of 'running' threads would
increase and eventually you'd also see 'ready' ones on systems
not showing such symptoms otherwise.
In onstat -g spi ("Spin locks with waits") you'ld see one lock
called "fast mutex, checkpoint" with significant "Avg
Loop/Wait", esp. if this problem occurs frequently.
CPU VP process stacks would frequently show critenter ->
critwait -> mt_fast_lock in their upper part, indicating threads
aren't allowed into 'critical setions' right away (which would
be the expected case esp. during disk flush phase of a
non-blocking checkpoint), but are forced into precise
determination that they can proceed, under latch, i.e. one by
one. |
